ETMC Commends its Volunteer Team
New member recruitment under way
As you enter an East Texas Medical Center facility, the first person you see may be a volunteer . . . an “everyday angel” who shares in the mission of their ETMC hospital and who cares about the people who walk through its doors.
During National Healthcare Volunteer Week and National Hospital Week (celebrated in April and May respectively), the East Texas Medical Center Regional Healthcare System recognizes with gratitude the dedicated men and women who compose its regional volunteer corps. These include members of the ETMC Gilmer, ETMC Quitman and ETMC Tyler auxiliaries.
ETMC Auxilians annually contribute more than 80,000 hours in volunteer service as they assist patients, guests, physicians and employees, noted Elmer G. Ellis, president/CEO of the East Texas Medical Center Regional Healthcare System.
“The volunteers represent the home community within the hospital, and in turn, represent the hospital back to the community,” he explained. “These ambassadors are essential to our ability to provide services that focus on the comfort and needs of our patients and guests – they are truly a priceless resource.”
Adults who have an interest in volunteer opportunities are asked to call Jacque Fowler, manager of ETMC Volunteer Resources, at 903-531-8199.
“Volunteers with helping hands and caring hearts are part of the legacy of care provided by ETMC hospitals,” said Mrs. Fowler. “From young adults to seniors, volunteers work in a variety of roles that add to patient and guest comfort and ETMC’s overall commitment to excellent customer service.”
She added that studies prove that volunteering is good for everyone’s mental and physical health, as individuals make a difference in their world. Persons interested in joining ETMC’s volunteer team participate in a written application and interview, as well as standard background checks. ETMC offers weekly volunteer shifts as well as special opportunities that can fit individual schedules and interests.
