02 December, 2008
The Holly Lake Ranch Kiwanis Club hopes everyone had a safe and Happy Thanksgiving.
November 25th, our speaker was Kimberli Young from the Wisenbaker Diabetes Center, an affiliate of Trinity Mother Frances Health Systems.
Did You Know? More than 1 in 6 Americans has pre-diabetes. In pre-diabetes, blood glucose levels are higher than normal but aren't high enough to be called diabetes. Your risk for type 2 diabetes and heart disease is affected by a number of things. Overweight and obesity, high blood glucose, cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking and lack of physical activity are all risk factors to good health.
For further information on these two conditions that are becoming more prominent in our society, contact your primary care physician or the Wisenbaker Diabetes Center in Tyler - 903-531-4848.
If you would like to "Help Change the World One Child and One Community at A Time", please feel free to join us on Tuesdays at 12:00Noon at the Holly Lodge. On October 28th, the Holly Lake Ranch Kiwanis Club welcomed Dr. Terry Peery as our guest speaker. Dr. Peery is another of the “stars” hired by Trinity Mother Frances Health Systems. The subject of his presentation was sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that occurs when a person's breathing is interrupted during sleep. If left untreated, sleep apnea can result in hypertension, stoke, heart failure, irregular heartbeats and heart attacks. Also, sleep apnea can be responsible for poor performance in everyday activities in adults and academic underachievement in children and adolescents.
Trinity Mother Frances Sleep Center at 120. E. Charnwood in Tyler opened in January 2007. If you needed further information about sleep apnea or a sleep study, please contact TMF Telecare Plus at 903-531-5678.

26 August, 2008
From Trinity Mother Frances, Robin Rowan, from the Children's Miracle Network, was our guest on August 12th. The proceeds from the Club's annual Christmas Auction are donated each year and because of our member's generosity, the HLRKC gives more money to the CMN than any other Kiwanis Club in Wood County or in the TX/OK Division 34.
Robin brought us up-to-date on the new Prenatal Unit at TMF. When a baby was born premature in Tyler at TMF and had problems, it was off to Dallas. Now, there is a “preemie” unit with twelve beds that can also accommodate the parents of a sick child.
The Kiwanis News is going on vacation! The HLRKC reports will be back the end of September.

Did you know that 70% of adoptive children waiting for families are 8 years of age or older, in a minority or sibling group and that 19,000 children “age-out” every year? Denise Grugle of the East Texas Heart Gallery was the Holly Lake Ranch Kiwanis Club speaker on July 29th. The Heart Gallery, based in Mineola, is changing the numbers though a traveling art show featuring children ready for adoption. Denise designs and organizes small and large-scale public events where the portraits are on display. These displays are usually in conjunction with: National Adoption Day (November), Child Abuse Prevention Month (April), and Foster Care Awareness Month (May). Just recently, the Heart Gallery took several of the children to Tiger Creek and Tyler State Park for a photo event.

28 July, 2008
Well since the Kiwanis News has taken a few weeks off from reporting, we are sure everyone is “clamoring” to find out what we have been up to.
Since our last report, the Club has welcomed two new members: Don and Ann Weersing.
We also have had some interesting speakers in the last few weeks. From Ilene & Ed Casper of the Holly Lake Ranch Web Site, Belinda Flowers of Holly Lake General Reminders (sent to your computer), Carol Taylor, Wood County Tax Assessor and Luis Rocha of American Genetics International.
Did you know you could pay your taxes online with a credit card? Carol Taylor, our new Wood County Tax Assessor, informed the Club of this convenience and by the time you read this, you probably will be able to pay with a credit card in person at either of the Tax Offices (Quitman & Hawkins). For more information, go to the website: www.co.wood.tx.us www.co.wood.tx.us
Since 1986, Luis Rocha, President of American Genetics International, has been involved in the marketing of all types of livestock genetics by offering a full-service export business to both foreign clients and U.S. breeders that need assistance in purchasing and selling genetics. Mr. Rocha is Chairman of the Livestock Committee for the Animal Transportation Association. AATA is a non-profit membership organization consisting of members in 25 countries who are concerned with the safe and humane transport of all type of animals by any mode of transport. For more information on this fascinating business, go to the website: www.american-genetics.com www.american-genetics.com.

April 29th, Mr. Brian Burks, the new Executive Director of the Brookshires in Hawkins, was our featured speaker. Mr. Burks is living here on the Ranch and will be joined by his family after school is over for the summer. When asked about how some foods have soared in prices, Mr. Burks attributes the rising costs to corn being used to produce ethanol (many animals eat corn as a main staple) and the high price of gas that effects the trucking industry. His best advice: Do not go grocery shopping hungry, have a list of what you need and stick to that list. That is easier said that done!
MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!!! The HLRKC Waffle Breakfast will be Saturday, May 24th beginning at 7:00am til 9:30am at the HLVFD Hall. Tickets are $7.00 for adults, $3.00 for children 12yrs-6yrs and under 5 are free. Please join us to enjoy the great waffles and all the trimmings from Lone Star Waffle Company. Gary McKinley, Director of the Wood County Industrial Commission, was our guest and speaker on April 8th. The good news/bad news is that Wood County is growing more each year. The hotel occupancy is holding steady at about 45%, which equates to a lot of visitors to the shops and events in our area. The latest big event was the Toyota Texas Bass Classic, which happened this last weekend. And coming up, is the Spring Swing Festival & Art Show May 2-4 in Quitman. For more information on this event, please contact the Quitman Chamber of Commerce.
On April 15th, Jerry Edwards, Executive Director, and Jennifer Williams, Volunteer Coordinator/Family Advocate from the Northeast Texas Child Advocacy Center, were our speakers. Last year the N.E.T.C.A.C. had a confirmation rate of 57% in the 373 cases brought to the Center. Given this number and the number of confirmed CPS cases as well as the unknown number of unreported incidencies, the Center conservatively estimates that at least an additional 100-150 child victims in our area are still not receiving the vital services that the Center provides. If you would like to volunteer your time or make a donation, please contact the Center - 903-629-7588.
The fun way to donate to the Center is to play in the N.E.T.C.A.C. Golf Tournament being held at Holly Lake Ranch Golf Club on Tuesday, May 6, 2008. For more information, please contact the Holly Lake Ranch Pro Shop - 903-769-2397.

He is best known, however, for being the most popular and oldest contestant on the award winning television show “Survivor Thailand”. His book, “Shaping My Hat”, is now in its second printing. When not assisting a charity or keynoting at corporate events, Jake and his wife Jeni can often be seen riding their mountain bikes or paddling their canoe at nearby Hide-Away-Lake.
If your Club or Organization would like more information on Jake Billingsley or his book, go to his website: www.jakebillingsley.com www.jakebillingsley.com.
President Tammie Hosea presented member Jerry Fitzgerald with the Legion of Honor Award for 45 years of membership in Kiwanis International. Jerry joined Kiwanis on February 14, 1963 in Dallas. On March 11th, Matt Clapp and his staff treated the Holly Lake Ranch Kiwanis Club and members of the Harmony & Hawkins Key Clubs to lunch at the Rockin C Ranch. The reason for this lunch was to present Matt and the Ranch a check for $1,500.00 toward scholarships to the Camp. This money came from the proceeds from our Chili Supper in January.
Our speaker on March 18th was Rusty Fennell from the Hiway 80 Rescue Mission Ministries in Longview. The Mission was established in 1955 and the Hope Haven Home for Women & Children has been in service for nearly a decade. Last year alone, thanks to the more than 5,300 volunteers, the Mission was able to serve 117,700 meals and provide a night of lodging for 26,700 men, women & children. If you or your organization would be interested in volunteering or donating time, goods, or money to the Mission, please visit their web site: www.hiway80.org www.hiway80.org for more information.
