Holly Lake Women's 9-Hole Golf Association
The HLR 9-hole golf group was started in 1983 with 9 members. Those ladies were Caroline Berry, Fern Cotton, Mary Kay Dasicon, Adele Holland, Irma Mathews, Dell Proveck, Billy Rasberry, Annette Schapero and Zola Weatherford. They met every Wednesday and played a scramble. The last Wednesday of the month, they played a scramble with the 18 hole group. Being affili8ated with the 18 holers, they also played in their tournaments. The 9-holers met once a month in the home of one of the member's for a luncheon. The luncheon tradition started by Adele Holland, continued for many years until the 9-hole group became too large to be handled in ones home. This problem was solved by each member ordering their lunch form the 19th Hole before we played golf - with our business meeting following lunch.
The year, 2005, we had a membership of 52 and decided we would become an organization of our own. We received a lot of cooperation from the pro shop and others to help us attain our goal and became known as HLR 9-Hole Golf Association our past presidents have been: Cazzie Husbands and Lin Dunham.
Our current officers are: President Vanette Ball, Past President Lin Dunham, Vice President Barbara Ward, Treasurer Judy Jordan and Johnna Hagewood Secretary. Our current membership is 49.
The 9-hole golf association's purpose is to promote fun and good sportsmanship and we stress the rules while improving our golf game. Not only do we have fun while we play, we enjoy the camaraderie during the social time at the 19th Hole after we play. Through the years, we have had many 9-holers join the 18 hole group. We had 6 of our members who joined this year. Although we miss them, this shows we do play and learn the basics of golf while having a good time.
We play golf every Wednesday morning and the 1st Wednesday of the month is a scramble, the last Wednesday of the month is play your own ball format. The other Wednesday's, the pro shop, usually Daryl Dyer, comes up with some interesting and challenging games for us to play i.e. 3-3-3, 3 hole scramble, best two ball net, one low gross, one low net, 2 lady alternate shot, just to name a few. It costs $3.00 to play and we have a mulligan fee of 50 cents and a 25 cent chip-in fee each week for those who wish to partake. The chip-in money carries over from week to week until some wins. The mulligan money goes into our treasury.
There are six tournaments a year: Spring fling, Jack and Jill, President's cup, Club Championship, Member-Member and Fall Flung. The Spring fling and the Fall flung are amazing tournaments i.e.: wearing fireman's boots while teeing off, using the same club from T-box to green, using a tennis ball to putt into the hole. Get The Idea? The Jack and Jill couples tournament enables us to enjoy seeing men playing golf on a Wednesday morning: this year we had 18 teams who entered this tournament. The Club Championship and the President's Cup tournament are a little more serious but remember one of our purposes is playing enjoyable golf. The winner of the Presidents Tournament receives a traveling crystal cup. This was won by Lee Anna Brickman, Barbara Thomas, Kaye Held and Barbara Klinker. The HLR 9-Hole G.A. Club Champion shop trophy was won by Vanette Ball, Nelda Pearce, Cazzie Husbands Bettu Gregerson and Glennda Farrell.
We have a Christmas luncheon every year and there we acknowledge the most improved player of the year. LeeAnna Brickman in 2005 and Margaret Simard in 2006. We also present the award for 9-hole sharp shooter (most rounds under 50 and under 100) Kaye Held won in 2005 and Betty Gregerson in 2006.
Our Association is made up of women of all levels of golf, from beginners to those who only wish to play 9-holes of golf. We stress enjoying the companionship of others and trying to improve our golf game. We also have some members who belong to the “pink tees” group. These are ladies over 70 who can tee off as far to the front of the T Boxes as they wish!
After play-day the 1st Wednesday of the month, we have lunch and then our business meeting. At the meeting those who broke 50 or 100 the preceding month are acknowledged and receive a pin. Those who birdied a hole will also be recognized. We have a book in the pro shop where these records are kept.
If you are interested in joining this fun group. please contact the Pro Shop and they will give you the necessary information.
Remember -Once again the purpose is to have an enjoyable time while playing golf.
