Golf Course Maintenance May 2010
The Golf Course Maintenance Department has spent the last few months getting ready for summer. As everyone knows from experience with their own landscaping, there is much to be done in the spring time to get everything in shape.
It is hard to say exactly when the greens, fairways, and rough will come around. The weather always has the final say; the grass needs the warm nights and days to really begin growing. With proper cultivation and fertilization there will be no doubt they will improve. This process is gradual and is hard to see on a daily basis.
Below are a few cultural practices necessary to stimulate as much plant growth as possible:
· Pre-emergence herbicide has already been applied to fairways, roughs, and greens
· Slow release fertilizer has been applied to the fairways and roughs. The greens have had one application of soluble 21-0-0 and K-mag fertilizers. The greens have had weekly liquid fertilizer, micro package, and humic acid applications.
· Core aerification for the greens was performed on April 26th.
· The fairway and rough aerification began the week of April 26.
Other projects for the months of April and May include:
· Rocking drainage ditch on #16
· Adding irrigation on #8, #18, and nursery area
· Bathroom work to be completed
· Driving range mats installation
· Fungicide application to the greens have been made weekly
· Installation of new irrigation valve on #17
· Installation of 10 new valve boxes
· Tree removal at restroom on #5
· Repairing window at ice machine on cart barn
I was asked to give a golf cart safety tip. Tommy King has noticed how many golfers drive in their carts with their left foot hanging out.
As a trained EMT, CMS; Tommy is concerned about this bad habit. Mr. King is concerned about the driver having his foot get caught under the cart and causing a bad injury, hopefully just a bruise, but insightfully Mr. King said a major break, or damaged knee could cause permanent damage. Thanks for the warning, Tommy.
I would like to introduce Kevin “Car wreck” Yondle as the employee of the quarter. When things get “hairy” Kevin is always there to complete the task. Kevin is one crack employee. He has been working “like a plumber during a hard freeze” this winter by preparing the entire fleet for the long busy mowing season. Thanks for the hard work Kevin.
Also, if you see Rob James tell him congratulations. Rob and my crew have been competing in a “Biggest Loser” competition. As you will be able to tell Rob lost the most weight by percentage. Congratulations Rob!!! Thanks Delbert.
We certainly appreciate the support from all the members.
Thank you,
Clayton Wood
