Golf Maintenance

Golf Course Maintenance

February 2012

The course is headed into winter in relatively good condition considering the tough summer conditions. The rain we have had recently has been a blessing and we welcome more beneficial rainfall. Looking forward through the winter numerous dead trees will be disposed.

The greens will be speeding up through the winter due to dormancy of the champions Bermuda grass. We have raised the heights of cut by 30 thousandths of an inch. This is roughly the equivalent of 3 pieces of paper. This small difference will promote more roots to help over winter. After all these years of tending to golf courses, I still find it amazing that our equipment can mow 3 acres the height of a nickel.

This time of year the pins will be changed once a week. Thanks Delbert. The greens will be mowed when needed and rolled at least once a week. The leaves will soon quit falling; continue to be patient as you search for your ball. 99% of you never hit in the woods anyway, so be patient with the other 1%.

During the winter months expect the sand bunkers to get a little softer, and you should expect a few fired egg lies. Frost delays will be the same as last year. If we can start before 9:30 we will have the 1st shotgun. If we can’t start by then we will have the 2nd shotgun only for the day. Also, expect rain delays and more cart path only because of wet conditions to last longer than usual.

Enjoy the course and remember, it is important to take extra care of the course. This time of year the turf cannot heal itself from damage. Be extra careful when driving your carts and be sure to repair your divots and ball marks. Any damage today will be seen in March. Leave the golf course in a little better shape than when you arrived.

The employee of the quarter is Gilberto. He is dedicated to Holly Lake and enjoys his job. If you see Gilberto tell him congratulations, but be careful his mower may mulch a pinecone your way if you surprise him.

A special thanks goes to William!! Thanks William Pace we appreciate you mentoring the youths of the area. The guys at golf maintenance appreciate your efforts.

Thanks for your continued support for Holly Lake Ranch Golf Course and have a Wonderful 2012.

Respectfully,

Clayton Wood
